Using Sine Workflows to conduct safety training for contractors

Perry's Ice Cream is an ice cream manufacturer and distributor located in Akron, New York. Having been in business for over 100 years, Perry's products are distributed across New York, Western Pennsylvania, New England, and Northeast Ohio.

As an Ice Cream manufacturer, Perry’s is required to be in compliance with OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) standards for using ammonia refrigeration. We interviewed the Process Safety Management Coordinator (PSM) at Perry's, Mathew Stachura, who manages the contractor safety program. A major part of his role is to make sure that his workers and contractors are properly inducted and trained on the safe usage of ammonia - this is where Sine Workflows was able to help.

"We use ammonia refrigeration to freeze and cool many of our products. OSHA says you need to maintain certain safety requirements and my job is making sure we meet those requirements.”

Digital Safety Training

Before using Sine Workflows, Perry’s was using paper and pen, a secretary at the front door and a PowerPoint presentation to manage and administer their safety training. Contractors would come in the front door, go through a lengthy training process and have to complete a paper-based quiz. Not only was this wasting valuable time on site, but it was contributing to a messy paper trail and proving to be an unreliable process.

“It used to take an hour for the training and then about half an hour for the quiz, then for me to sit down and review the quiz, you’re looking at an hour and 45 minutes of my time.”

By using Sine Workflows, Matthew is able to digitize the entire safety training and induction process. Contractors are sent a Workflow link to complete prior to arriving on site so they can watch the safety videos, upload insurance documents and verify that they have read and understood the material.

“Now (with Sine) it takes about 20 minutes for them to go through the training, take the quiz and get everything submitted online.”

Perry’s has successfully inducted more than 200 contractors so far this year, saving an estimated 224 hours in training time and $5,800 in staffing costs in the last 8 months*

Robust Emergency Response Plan

At a manufacturing plant with complex machinery and chemicals, having a robust emergency response plan is critical for the safety of everybody on site. Sine was able to assist Perry’s with its emergency response plans by enabling Perry’s to require all visitors and contractors entering its facility to check-in on the Sine kiosk so that Perry’s can maintain an accurate log of everybody whose checked-in and on site.

“Sine is a part of our emergency response plan – We pull up the Sine dashboard to see who is on site and make sure we have accountability for them”

If an emergency situation were to take place, Perry’s can utilize the roll call feature on the Sine Mobile App, where they can easily capture and r
